Offering a unique experience of sleeping under the stars, out in the wilderness, fly camping is perfect for those looking to really ‘experience’ the bush up close. Basic, but comfortable camps will be set up for groups (usually private and to a maximum of 6 people) to hike out to in the middle of the bush. Imagine sitting by the camp fire, listening to the sounds of the bush around you, and truly absorbing the energy, while gazing up to the endless starry night. This is a TrueAfrica experience!

You will undoubtedly see an abundance of wildlife from the game drive vehicle, and usually will be interested in the ‘big’ game – lions, elephant, giraffe, buffalo, wildebeest etc. However, walking safaris are an amazing experience (and will be highly recommended by us!) to truly learn about the ecosystem from the ground up. Your experienced guides will be able to advise you as to how such a small thing as a termite contributes to the larger ecosystem and how without them, everything would be different. Or they may teach you as to how the different bird calls can alert various plains game to danger approaching (ie, predators). You may see big game on your walking safari – but this is certainly not the objective. Your guides will be highly trained and clients’ safety is paramount.

We recommend trekking the highly endangered Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda as based on our experience, this offers the optimal trekking experience. While it is also possible (and, may be somewhat cheaper) to do so in the Congo and Uganda; Rwanda most definitely offers the best value experience. Meaning that the small additional price to trek gorillas in the remote Volcanoes NP is worth every extra dollar!  

One of the most enriching and memorable activities which we encourage on a safari is experiencing an authentic cultural exchange with the local people of each region. Whether it be visiting an incredibly traditional local Maasai village on the outskirts of the Maasai Mara where you can help herd the goats and learn about Maasai life, or visit the Hadzabe tribe who inhabit the shores of Lake Eyasi or just absorb the Swahili culture along the East African coastline, we encourage you to delve deeper into the safari experience… Trust us, you won’t regret it!

In certain areas you can enjoy a change from the typical game drive in a vehicle and instead, experience wildlife viewing from the water. The Selous, Okavango Delta, Victoria Falls and Lower Zambezi all offer opportunities to cruise along in a boat while elephant, buffalo and more come down to the water to drink, and of course, there are plenty of hippo and crocs to watch out for too!

In a handful of places in East Africa you can trek to a number of habituated chimpanzee families, most well-known are those made famous by Jane Goodall’s research and conservation in the Mahale Mountains and Gombe Stream National Park. You can also see chimps in Uganda and if you’re lucky, in parts of Rwanda and north-western Tanzania.

Available in select areas throughout sub-Saharan Africa (ask us!), ballooning is a romantic and exhilarating method of witnessing the stunning scenery of Africa. You may see some wildlife from the air (it is an especially amazing way to witness the Great Migration)

Canoeing offers you a great way to experience the wildlife and scenery from the water, while gliding along lakes and river tributaries – this is possible in a variety of regions, such as the Lower Zambezi (Zambia), Okavango Delta (Botswana) and Arusha National Park (Tanzania). Traditional mokoro rides are available in the Okavango Delta and are an absolute “must-do” at your water-based camp.

Dhows have been sailing the African coastline from Kenya to Mozambique for centuries – you too can experience lazy days in a traditional Swahili dhow. We can organise everything from multi-day dhow sailing trips, hopping from island to island, or simply a sunset cruise along the Zanzibar coastline.

An adventurous way to experience the African bush! This activity is great for families and is available in parts of Kenya and Tanzania. Ask our team how and where you can include this in your itinerary!

Whether you are a passionate equestrian who is looking for a multi-day riding safari galloping through the bush, or simply a novice who wants to walk along slowly across the plains, we can arrange riding safaris to suit. There are a range of great properties for riding in Kenya, Botswana and to a lesser extent, in Tanzania.

We can organise everything from fishing the mighty Nile perch (weighing up to 110kgs) on Lake Victoria, to deep-sea and sports fishing off the Kenyan Coast. We’re not experts on fishing – but we know who the best fishing guides are and can secure you great rates with them!

Much of Africa’s fauna are active in the darker hours, so why not experience a night game drive during your safari? You may be lucky enough to see some of the big cats on the hunt (leopard and lion are particularly active at night), or perhaps see some of the more elusive species such as the porcupine, serval or caracal… Night game drives can vary in length and can often be done till around 10.30pm. Not all camps can offer them, however some areas like Tarangire National Park, South Luangwa National Park and the Maasai Mara Conservancies do offer these exciting drives.

Much of the exploration of Central and Northern Kenya was done using caravans of camels. These days, a range of properties in the area pay homage to history and offer camel trekking as an activity. This is a good one for kids and no previous riding experience is necessary (how many people have camel riding experience anyway?). We do also work with a number of operators who can organize multi-day camel treks for those who are looking for an incredibly unique safari experience!

We have many friends who are heavily involved in conservation projects across Africa. We’re able to arrange for you to participate in some of these various projects during your safari – whether it be helping to identify lions as part of the Mara Predator Project, or maybe you’re interested in helping to relocate rhinos; we’re able to suggest ways to incorporate some conservation activities during your safari.

While some of Africa’s land-based species often get more attention, the sea-based species also offer an amazing wildlife experience. From the world-famed Mnemba Atol off the shores of Zanzibar, to the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park in Kenya and the stunning Quirimbas Archipelago of Northern Mozambique, there’s an abundance of great diving / snorkeling sites. Depending on the tides and time of year, visitors can also dive with the majestic whale sharks around Mafia Island and off the coast of Mozam.
